Just east of Gamla Stan lies the island of Skeppsholmen with its varied collection of museums. The intriguing Modern Muséet (Tues-Thurs 11am-8pm, Fri-Sun 11am-6pm), has one of the best collections of modern art in Europe with some of the greatest artists of the 20th century on display: Picasso, Matisse, Dali, Warhol and Lichtenstein; to name a few. At the northern tip of the island you'll find the Östasiatiska Muséet (Tues noon-8pm, Wed- Sun noon-5pm) with its incredible collection of Eastern antiquities such as 5th century Chinese tomb figures, bronze krishnas, 6th century Buddhas and intricate jade amulets. The National Art Museum (Tues 11am-8pm, Wed-Sun 11am-5pm) is on the waterfront by the bridge to the island. This houses an impressive collection of applied art, such as beds slept in by kings, plates eaten off by nobles and cabinets used by queens along with Art Nouveau coffee pots and some fine examples of Swedish furniture design. There is some European sculpture upstairs and a stunning display of 17th century Russian Orthodox icons. There are also some works by Rembrandt and Renoir. The gallery also focuses on the Swedish "Oppositionists" who were inspired by the French Impressionists; some notable examples of this would be the work of Ernst Josephson, particularly his Portrait of a Journalist and the work of Carl Frederick Hill. |
