One of the best ways to appreciate the true scale of Mälaren is to go over to Mariefred on board the S.S. Mariefred, a coal-fired steamship built in 1903 that still makes the 3½ hour journey from City Hall (Tue-Sun). Mariefred is a picturesque little town made up of timber houses with narrow streets and lakeside pathways. One of the main attractions is Gripsholm Slott, a 16th century castle with a theatre and a particularly fine Renaissance interior. |
